After high school I attended the University of California Davis. While at Davis I studied Environmental Policy and specialized in water quality. Through this experience, I had the chance to grow my passion for science and eventually decided to go into science education. I earned my teaching license at UC Davis and taught in California for five years prior to being hired at Sam Barlow High School.

I moved to Oregon in the summer of 1998 after being hired to teach at Sam Barlow High School. For the next 13 years, I worked as a technology teacher, an honors biology and environmental biology teacher, football coach, baseball coach, and eventually earned my administrative license and became an Assistant Principal. In 2011 I had the privilege of becoming the principal at Gordon Russell Middle School where I learned about the true power of education and what it means to engage students. Now, I have returned to Barlow proving the adage, "Once a Bruin, Always a Bruin". I can't wait to get reacquainted with the student body, our parents, and our community after being away for the past three years.

I truly enjoy my work, however my family makes it all worth while. My wife Mindy is perhaps the most creative and caring person I know who pushes me to see things from different perspectives. My son Gary is a talented musician who I thoroughly enjoy listening to. My son Gavin keeps me on my toes and helps me to realize that being young is an important thing in life. Finally, my crazy dogs Aiko and Abu, along with my 40 chickens and massive garden keep me working at home. All are very good things that I love dearly.

Hello! My name is Tim Collins.  This summer I transferred from Gresham High School to Sam Barlow High School to serve as an Assistant Principal.  I was initially hired as a science teacher for Gresham High School back in 1998 and in 2010 I moved into the role of Assistant Principal.  I grew up in Oregon and attended David Douglas High School.  After high school, I spent 4 years at the University of Oregon and received a BS in Chemistry and Biology in 1996.  My graduate work was at Oregon State University where I received my MA in Teaching in 1998 and my PhD in Science Education in 2011.  In addition to teaching at Gresham HS, I also spent two years teaching science education courses at Oregon State University.  In my free time, I like to hike, camp, run, and play disc golf.  My wife and I live in the Gresham area and my wife teaches in the district as well.  My two daughters attend school on the Barlow side of the district and have jump-roped at Barlow half-time shows on numerous occasions.  I have spent most of my life in east Multnomah county and am excited to continue to live and serve in this community!  Go Bruins!!

I grew up in East County and went to SBHS, graduating class of 1985. I was a a three sport varsity athlete (volleyball, ski team and softball) and a member of the NHS. After high school I moved to Idaho and then to San Luis Obispo, CA. When I left California I continued with my education at MHCC, then transferred to PSU and earned my degree in Biology, specializing in Zoology/Physiology. I then continued on and received a Masters in Secondary Science Education from PSU. I taught Biology and Physical Science at David Douglas High School and then Biology, Physical Science, Algebra and Physics at Sunset High School for six years. I worked as a soccer official and coached softball, I also played indoor soccer, short stop and second base on a slow pitch softball team. An opportunity presented itself and I moved to Brooklyn, NY and taught various science classes at Automotive High School for two years. I then became a Dean of Discipline for the next four years while teaching Biology. While at Automotive, I continued my education at Baruch College and earned my second masters in Supervision and Administration. I moved back to the Pacific Northwest the summer of 2010 and became the Assistant Principal at Madras High School. I came to Portland many weekends and began to look for employment opportunities to facilitate a move back. On May 18, 2012 I was offered the position of Assistant Principal at Sam Barlow High School and jumped at the opportunity to come home. Since moving back, I have spent time getting to know the administrative, office and teaching staff, as well as work on updating my house. I am excited to back in East County and proud to call myself a Bruin!
