Recreation Swim Policies
- All swimmers under age of 14 must have an adult (18+) present with them during all swimming activities. NEW!
- Children under 9 yrs of age OR under 42" MUST be accompanied by an adult in the water at all times.
- All children must be fully toilet trained in order to swim.
- Swim diapers are not allowed.
- An adult must be in the water within arms reach at all times with non swimmers or those wearing lifejackets.
- Barlow and Gresham Pools do not provide lifejackets. All personal floatation devices must be Coast Guard Approved, of appropriate size and worn correctly as it's intended.
- Non-swimmers are not allowed in deep end or off diving boards, even if they are wearing a lifejacket.
- We request that children over 6 yrs and/or in first grade use the locker room according to their affirmed gender. Barlow Pool only has mens/womens locker rooms available, we do not have family changing areas. Please plan accordingly.
- Lifeguards commonly ask people (any age) to do a short swim test prior to going into deep water. If the participant cannot complete the swim test to the level that the lifeguard feels is successful, then they will be asked to stay in the shallow area. We will always err on the side of safety.
- Food is not allowed on deck.
- Please keep street shoes off pool deck
- Glass containers are not allowed in pool facility.
- No long breath holding or prolonged repetitive breath holding, it's for your own safety!
- Barlow Pool accepts cash or check only. We do not have a card reader. Checks payable to SBHS.
- Barlow Pool offers basketball hoops, balls and a low diving board. Currently our high dive is out of order. Sometimes other various toys will be available but are dependent on the number of people.
- All outside toys need to be approved by the head lifeguard on duty.
- We do not allow water wings or large inflatables.
- Mermaid tails can only be used by those who pass a swim test and must stay in the shallow area only.
- Those who are not swimming must stay in spectator area.
- We reserve the right to add policies, rules, or prohibit any action at any time if we feel an activity is not safe. Lifeguards are allowed to make those judgment calls in the moment
- We do not tolerate any harassment or arguing with aquatic staff members, especially regarding rules and pool policies. Patrons that argue or harass aquatic staff will be asked to leave the facility.
- The consumption or possession of alcohol and drugs is strictly prohibited in our facility (and high school campus). Any guest who appears to be under the influence, impaired or acting unsafely will be required to leave the premises immediately. We reserve the right to contact local law enforcement or emergency services regarding such situations.
This is not a complete list of pool rules, but rather addresses the most frequently asked questions regarding our policies. If you have any questions please feel free to call the pool or email the aquatic director (contact info is provided below).
Summer Swim Lesson Program 2026
The following information is for group swim lessons. Lessons are for ages 3-14. Sessions consist of 8 lessons, held Mon-Thur for 2 weeks; with the exception of Session 1 that will be held Mon-Fri, then Mon-Wed due to district closure dates.

Level Descriptions
Group Lesson Policies
- Cancellations must be done at least 5 business days prior to the start of the session to receive a full refund.
- Pool schedules are always subject to maintenance / repair closures. If any closures arise, info will be sent out as far in advance as possible and money will be refunded as needed.
- A minimum number of participants is required for each class otherwise classes could be combined or canceled.
- Transferring classes or sessions is allowed but not guaranteed.
- If a child is placed in the wrong level we will do our best to transfer them into the appropriate class, however sometimes it's not possible and refunds/credits will be issued. We will NOT overbook classes when transferring.
- Barlow Pool accepts cash or check only.
- If a class overbooks by accident, a staff member will contact the last registered student [parent] about alternate options, refunds or credits.
- Spectators may observe lessons every day from bleacher area.
- All participants must be toilet trained. No diapers or training pants allowed.
- Locker rooms, showers and bathrooms are available on site.
- If a class is booked, please put your name and number on a wait list. We sometimes open additional classes if there is another instructor available.
- Barlow Pool is located at 5105 SE 302nd Ave, Gresham, OR 97080. Please enter the main (large) parking lot off Lusted Rd near the football stadium. Our building is the one with all the murals on it.
- Participants should not attend class if they are sick or have diarrhea.
- An adult over 18 must be present for your child if they are under 14 years old. This rule applies for all swimming activities at Gresham and Barlow Swim Pools.

Private Lessons
We offer private (1 child per instructor) and semi private (2-3 children per 1 instructor) swim lessons throughout summer.
Private Lesson Prices
Booking fee: $50 is due within 72 hours of receiving your full confirmation from the aquatic staff member. The booking fee goes towards your lesson payment. There is a non refundable processing fee attached to any online or card reader payment.
The remainder of your lesson payment will be due in full at the first lesson. This remainder must be paid in cash or check.
How to Schedule
Cancellation & Private Lesson Policies
- Cancellations due to sudden illness or injury - 24hr notice policy.
- Cancellations must be done with 24 hours notice of lesson by email only in order to receive a refund, reschedule or credit.
- Cancellations done without proper notice will not be refunded or credited.
- Do NOT cancel by phone, we will not receive the message in time to notify the instructor and therefore you will not be refunded.
- Late cancellations (less than 24hr notice) may owe for the lesson in the event the instructor has already arrived for the lesson. If we are able to book your canceled spot you will not owe for that lesson.
- Cancellations for multiple lessons MUST be done at least 5 business days in advance.
- Instructor Changes & Cancellations:
- If the instructor that's scheduled cannot make a lesson we will automatically look for a substitute instructor.
- Due to the volume of lessons scheduled, we do not contact you about instructor changes.
- If there are no substitutes available then we will call as far in advance as possible to cancel or reschedule.
- We will give a full refund or credit (your choice) for lessons we cannot reschedule or find a sub to cover.
- Full refunds or credits will be given for any cancellations due to inclement weather, repairs or school closures.
- "No Shows" will not be refunded, credited or rescheduled. No shows may also be subject to all future lesson being taken off the schedule, and/or full prepayment for any future lesson blocks scheduled.
- Please keep your confirmation email once you receive it, you might need to refer to it at your first lesson date.
- Changes or edits in private lessons:
- Due to the high volume of reservations made during summer, we are no longer able to make large changes to lesson reservations.
- We will do our best to make accommodations for emergency situations only.
- We understand you might see instructor availability added throughout the summer, however we will not be accepting changes to swap instructors.
- You must pay in full on or before the first lesson. We only accept cash or check at Barlow Pool, we do not have a card reader at Barlow. We cannot allow the lesson if full payment is not made at time of first lesson. Refer to your confirmation email for your payment info.
Pool Rentals
We cannot accommodate pool rentals at this time. When rentals become available we will update this information.
Sam Barlow High School Aquatic Sports
For all incoming freshman, new students or even returning students... Sam Barlow High School offers swim team and water polo! No experience is required for either sport, see the details below!
Swim Team
Sam Barlow Swim Team is an OSAA winter sport. The season runs Nov 17-Feb 21. Practices will begin November 17 after school. Swimming is a no cut sport, the more the merrier so bring yourself and friends! No experience is required! Maybe you did swim lessons, maybe you did a few years of youth swim club, maybe you've only been to recreation swim or maybe you have zero swimming experience at all... doesn't matter, you're still welcome to join the team. Water Polo
Sam Barlow Water Polo is a fall sport. The season runs Aug 18-Nov 15. Practices begin Aug 18 and are held at both MHCC Pool and Barlow Pool during preseason.
